Marital residence in 46% of all societies is patrilocal, with the highest proportions found in Africa (75%), East Eurasia (69%), and the Circum-Mediterranean (61%), and lowest in South America (14%). Worldwide, virilocal residence is second most prevalent, reaching a high of 44% in North America, 27% in South America, and 25% in the Insular Pacific. Uxorilocal residence is present in 32% of South American and 13% of North American societies, while neolocal, optional-ambilocal, matrilocal, and avunculovcal modes are all relatively rare worldwide.
