Hypotheses
- "Political complexity is directly related to the degree of external threat" (693)Abrahamson, Mark - Correlates of political complexity, 1969 - 2 Variables
It is suggested that the degree of political complexity is more strongly related to degree of social differentiation than to size and concentration of population.

It is suggested that the degree of political complexity is more strongly related to degree of social differentiation than to size and concentration of population.
Related Hypotheses Cite More By Author - "Monogamy is significantly related to a greater degree of societal complexity than is polygyny. . . . The organizational pattern most characteristic of polygynous societies can be noted as relatively intermediate in complexity rather than very simple" (15)Osmond, Marie W. - Toward monogamy: a cross-cultural study of correlates of type of marriage, 1965 - 2 Variables
This study presents a sociological theory of marriage type based on socioeconomic organization. Results suggest that intensive agriculture, more stratification, greater political integration, a fixed settlement pattern, a larger population, and greater labor specialization tended to be correlates of monogamy.
Related Hypotheses Cite More By Author - In preindustrial societies social development produces a trend toward increasingly less efficient manpower allocation (45)Udy, Stanley H., Jr. - Work in traditional and modern society, 1970 - 2 Variables
Udy divides methods of work organization into 'production determined', 'technologically determined', 'socially determined', and 'pluralistic' types, and examines their prevalence across societies with varying subsistence activities and levels of social and political stratification. Special attention is paid to processes of integration and differentiation and their role in effecting transitions between organization types.

Related Hypotheses Cite More By Author - "With preindustrial social development comes a progressive decline in the prevalence of production determined work organization, and a progressive increase in the prevalence of socially determined work organization" (35-36)Udy, Stanley H., Jr. - Work in traditional and modern society, 1970 - 2 Variables

Related Hypotheses Cite More By Author - The prevailing type of social base is related to the state of social development. Familial work organization receives its greatest relative impetus with the advent of sedentary agriculture. Specialized political units receive their greatest impetus with centralized government when they displace familial forms and gain control over resources (41-42)Udy, Stanley H., Jr. - Work in traditional and modern society, 1970 - 2 Variables

Related Hypotheses Cite More By Author - ". . . the lower the level of political complexity, the more likely the political communities within the cultural unit are to war with each other" (282)Otterbein, Keith F. - Internal war: a cross-cultural study, 1968 - 2 Variables
This study examines how social structure, political organization, and intersocietal relations may affect the incidence of internal warfare (between culturally similar political communities). Results show that in uncentralized political systems, fraternal interest groups and unauthorized raiding parties may increase the incidence of internal war.
Related Hypotheses Cite More By Author - Broad supernatural punishments will be positively associated with the evolution of political complexity.Gray, Russell D. - Cultural macroevolution matters, 2017 - 2 Variables
Researchers sampled 106 Austronesian societies from the Pulotu database to study the way political complexity evolves in relation to religious beliefs and practices. Specifically, they attempt to test the causal theory that supernatural punishment played a causal role in the emergence of large, complex societies. They use phylogenetic models to control for Galton's Problem in testing the supernatural punishment hypothesis in an effort to demonstrate the effectiveness of utilizing cross-cultural datasets in evaluating evolutionary change in human social organization.
