- Purely unilocal residence (without a significant alternative postmarital residence pattern) will be associated with the formation of a unilineal descent group (84-86).Korotayev, Andrey V. - Unilocal residence and unilineal descent: a reconsideration, 2004 - 2 Variables
This study focuses on the development of unilineal descent, reviewing previous theories and testing additional factors to explain the relationship between unilineal descent and unilocal residence. Results suggest four key factors leading to a low association between these two variables: insufficient alternatives to unilocal residence rule, instability of communal composition, absence of sedentary settlement pattern, and small average community size. A model linking all variables from the paper is presented.

This paper presents research on the factors that promote romantic love as a basis for marriage in non-industrial societies. After a discussion of the previous literature on romantic love in ethnographic societies, the authors used the SCCS, EA, and data from eHRAF to create a data set of 109 cultures and then utilized multiple ordinal regression to test the relationship between different types of families and post-marital residence practices and the importance of romantic love in marriage. The findings show that monogamy is significantly correlated with romantic love, while nuclear family organization and neolocal post-marital residence are not significantly correlated. The presence of polygyny is found to lower the probability of romantic love being a basis for marriage. These findings contradict previous research, which found a relationship between non-neolocal post-marital residence and the presence of romantic love in marriage.

Related Hypotheses Cite More By Author - Cultural transmission, resource scarcity, animal husbandry, community size, and caste stratification will be positively associated with a belief in moralizing gods, while agricultural potential, population size, and external warfare will be negatively associated with a belief in moralizing gods (11).Brown, Christian - The state and the supernatural: support for prosocial behavior, 2010 - 9 Variables
This article identifies several methodological errors in the original study or moralizing gods by Roes and Raymond (2003) and presents new multiple regression model. Results suggest that a belief in moralizing gods is spread though cultural transmission, but it is also associated with conditions such as lower agricultural potential and lower external warfare. The authors theorize that moralizing gods have functional purposes such as bolstering property rights or maintaining social hierarchy.
Related Hypotheses Cite More By Author - Threat of natural disasters will be negatively associated with frequency of warfare in state societies (32-35)Burtsev, Mikhail S. - An evolutionary agent-based model of pre-state warfare patterns: cross-cultu..., 2004 - 3 Variables
The authors construct a mathematical model from which they generate their main hypothesis that resource unpredictability should be associated with frequency of warfare. A cross-cultural test of this hypothesis was performed by Ember and Ember (1992). The authors critique these findings for state societies and test and alternate hypothesis for application to state societies.

This study was designed to determine whether there is a significant correlation between the number (or intensity) of restrictions on consumption of animal protein and a low level of animal protein. Findings do not support a correlation.

This study focuses on preferences for thinness or fatness in women cross-culturally. Results contradict previous studies and the hypothesis that preference for fatness in women is predicted by resource scarcity. Alternative explanations for valuation of fatness are explored, including climate and male dominance.
