  1. "Where resource stress is most severe, the most important deities tend to be conceptualized in terms of celestial entities" (87).Hayden, Brian - Alliances and ritual ecstasy: human responses to resource stress, 1987 - 2 Variables

This article hypothesizes that ritual ecstasy was selected for as a way for hunter-gatherers to cope with resource uncertainty by unifying separate groups. Results support this hypothesis and suggest a relationship between resource stress and deities as well as dependence on animals and presence of zoomorphic deities.

  2. In areas where agricultural or more complex societies have had a major impact on hunter/gatherer economies, high gods will be more important (88).Hayden, Brian - Alliances and ritual ecstasy: human responses to resource stress, 1987 - 2 Variables

  3. A society's reliance on hunting and fishing will be positively associated with the presence of active trance (269).Swanson, Guy E. - Trance and possession: studies of charismatic influence, 1978 - 2 Variables

This study examines correlates of trance and possession in pre-industrial societies. Results suggest that the presence of trance/possession is associated with subsistence, number of jurisdictional levels, and community decision-making.

  4. Climate and subsistence type will be associated with the percentage of animal foods in the diet.Pontzer, Herman - Effects of Evolution, Ecology, and Economy on Human Diet: Insights from Hunt..., 2021 - 3 Variables

This study, primarily a review on the evolution of the human diet, also includes a small study on the distribution of meat-eating and its relationship with climate and cultural factors, namely subsistence type. The authors find that societies with subsistence strategies that prioritize fishing, hunting, or pastoralism also tend to consume more animal products, whereas those that focus on agriculture have more plant-based diets. The authors argue that these small-scale societies have a healthier approach to diet than industrialized societies regardless of their subsistence type or meat consumption.

  5. High dependence on herding animals will be associated with mobilityEmber, Carol R. - Predictors of Land Privatization: Cross-Cultural Tests of Defendability and ..., 2020 - 2 Variables

In this article, the authors seek to understand the predictors of land privatization by empirically testing defendability and resource stress theory. By drawing on previous research they are able to test these theories in more expansive and nuanced ways. They conclude that they have found strong support for defendability theory.

  6. Inertness of subsistence raw materials and number of sovereign groups will be associated with the presence of high gods (302).Simpson, John H. - Sovereign groups, subsistence activities, and the presence of a high god in ..., 1979 - 3 Variables

This article investigates material and social predictors of belief in a high god. The author introduces a new variable, the inertness of subsistence raw materials, to be compared with Swanson’s (1960) variable representing the number of sovereign groups. Both variables were significant predictors of belief in high gods. Relevant theory is discussed.

  7. Treatment of the elderly will be related to climate, subsistence strategy, social stratification, and belief in active high gods (408).Glascock, Anthony P. - The myth of the golden isle: old age in pre-industrial societies, 1987 - 5 Variables

This study discusses the distribution of the treatment of the aged across a sample of pre-industrial societies. Data illustrate that the elderly were treated in a non-supportive or death-hastening manner in the majority of societies, dispelling the notion that a golden age/isle existed in pre-industrial societies in which the elderly were revered and supported. Results also suggest a relationship between age and treatment of the elderly and climate, social, and subsistence variables and the treatment of the aged.

  8. "Reported differences in personality descriptions among mixed farmers and pastoralists may be a result of a constellation of differences linked to the two types of economies" (295).Cone, Cynthia A. - Personality and subsistence: is the child the parent of the person?, 1979 - 7 Variables

This study examines the relationship between personality traits and subsistence type in mixed farming and pastoralists societies. Findings suggest that differences in child socialization do not significantly predict personality differences in mixed farming and pastoralist societies as much as one would expect. Adult experiences should be considered as better predictors of personality traits.

  9. Sign language will be found in societies more heavily dependent on hunting for basic subsistence (187).Divale, William Tulio - Hunting and the development of sign language: a cross-cultural test, 1977 - 2 Variables

The association between hunting and sign language is examined. It is hypothesized that sign language develops as a form of nonverbal communication to aid hunters in the coordinated stalking of game. Ethnographic evidence supports this hypothesis. A second hypothesis is also tested concerning the relationship between population size and non-verbal communication, however sampling procedures provided an inadequate test of this hypothesis.
