  1. Pathogen prevalence will be positively associated with percentage of society which prioritizes obedience (321).Murray, Damian R. - On the origins of cultural differences in conformity: Four tests of the path..., 2011 - 2 Variables

The authors contribute to a growing body of theory which posits cultural differences as a result of variable pathogen prevalence by testing the relationship between pathogen richness and various measures of conformity in a cross-regional sample. After controlling for confounds such as life expectancy, GDP, population density, arable land area, and agricultural labor force, the authors suggest that conformity is emphasized to varying degrees in response to the increased vulnerability to pathogens generally associated with deviation from normative social conduct.

  2. "As pathogen severity increases, so should permanenent marking of body areas that are attended to for evaluating attractiveness and mate quality" (403).Singh, Devendra - Sex differences in the anatomical locations of human body scarification and ..., 1997 - 6 Variables

This study examines the relationship between body scarification and pathogen prevalence. Authors hypothesize that risk of serious pathogens will be related to scarification on areas of the body that are associated with physical attractiveness and fertility. Results show that only female stomach scarification is significantly related to pathogen prevalence.

  4. Ratings of the importance of attractiveness as a criterion of mate choice will be related to pathogen prevalence across cultures (90).Gangestad, Steven W. - Pathogen prevalence and human mate preferences, 1993 - 5 Variables

This study focuses on the relationship between pathogen prevalence and mate selection. Results show that increased pathogen prevalence is significantly associated with an increased importance in the physical attractiveness of potential mates.

  5. The importance of trade will be related to warfare frequency (42)Korotayev, Andrey V. - Trade and warfare in cross-cultural perspective, 2008 - 3 Variables

This article examines the relationship between warfare and trade and concludes that the relationship varies within different levels of political organization.

  8. Socialization anxiety related to performance or nonperformance of a task will be correlated with cultural complexity (p. 16).Zern, David - The relationship of certain group-oriented and individualistically oriented ..., 1983 - 2 Variables

This article tests the relationship between child-training variables and cultural complexity. Attention is paid to different types of socialization pressure (group-oriented versus individual-oriented; the degree of anxiety created by the pressure). Findings suggest that group-oriented socialization promotes societal complexity, but individual-oriented socialization and pressure-induced anxiety do not.

  9. Pathogen stress will predict cultural rules restraining polygyny.Minocher, Riana - Explaining marriage patterns in a globally representative sample through soc..., 2019 - 2 Variables

Researchers examine marriage patterns of 186 societies from the Standard Cross-Cultural Sample (SCCS). The eleven predictor variables are pathogen stress, arranged female marriages, population density, father roles during infancy, temperature, social stratification, wealth inequality, internal warfare, assault frequency, female agricultural contribution, and sex ratio. The two outcome variables measuring polygyny are cultural rules constraining polygyny and the percentage of married men who are polygynous. Controlling on phylogeny using a global supertree of the languages, analysis of marriage patterns reveals that assault frequency and pathogen stress are the strongest predictors of polygyny. These findings offer additional support for the theories of harem-defense polygyny and male genetic quality.

  10. "Sociologically primitive peoples may be classified into those who are integrated in primary (clan), secondary (village), tertiary (tribe) and quaternary (tribal federations or states) groups. The first are the least and the latter are the most warlike" (66)Wright, Quincy - Primitive warfare and Appendix IX, 1942 - 2 Variables

This chapter is concerned with correlates of warlikeness among non-industrial societies. Findings indicate that warlikeness is associated with climate, mobility, subsistence, political integration, division of labor, culture contact.
