  1. "In . . . non-literate societies . . . when some forms of aggression, outward or inward-directed, occur frequently so also do other forms" (63)Palmer, Stuart - Aggression in fifty-eight non-literate societies: an exploratory analysis, 1970 - 3 Variables

Building on previous research concerning murder and suicide, this study investigates 18 forms of aggression and explores how they might be engendered by certain child-training practices. Results show a weak connection between most forms of aggression and child-training practices, but non-literate societies do show a positive correlation between murder and suicide. The author develops a theory positing that experience of social blockage will be related to outwardly-directed aggression, whereas social loss will be related to inwardly-directed aggression.

  2. "There is a considerable positive relationship between frequencies for murder and suicide in . . . non-literate societies" (323)Palmer, Stuart - Murder and suicide in forty non-literate societies, 1965 - 2 Variables

This paper tests assumptions regarding the inverse relationship between murder and suicide. Analysis suggests that murder and suicide in fact vary together, and they are also positively associated with overall punishment in a society.

  3. There will be a "relationship between the incidence or type of suicidal behavior in a society and its disciplinary practices" (734)Lester, David - The relation between discipline experiences and the expression of aggression, 1967 - 2 Variables

This paper investigates the relationship between discipline experiences in preindustrial societies and aggressive behavior at the societal level. No associations are found between discipline experiences and suicide, murder, aggression resulting from alcohol consumption, or aggression expressed in war-making.

  4. "There is a positive correlation between male narcissism on the one hand, and pressure for the child to achieve, anxiety over failure to achieve and frequency of achievement behavior on the other" (255)Slater, Philip E. - Maternal ambivalence and narcissism: a cross-cultural study, 1965 - 4 Variables

This article explores narcissism and child-rearing. The author presents a theory that, if a society’s structural pattern weakens the marital bond, the mother will be ambivalent toward the son who consequently will become narcissistic. This process would reinforce itself as it is repeated by each generation.

  5. In addition to socialization for aggression, there will be a positive relationship between father's sleeping distance and the frequency of homocide/ assault (300).Ember, Carol R. - Father absence and male aggression: a re-examination of the comparative evidence, 2002 - 3 Variables

This paper supports Beatrice B. Whiting's (1965) sex-identity conflict hypothesis which suggests a relationship between males' early identification with their mothers and male violence. Authors find that, in addition to socialization aggression, frequency of homicide/assault is significantly related to father-infant sleeping distance, particularly when residence is not matrilocal and/or warfare is more than occasional.

  6. Murder in primitive societies will be related to the societal disciplinary practices (735)Lester, David - The relation between discipline experiences and the expression of aggression, 1967 - 2 Variables

This paper investigates the relationship between discipline experiences in preindustrial societies and aggressive behavior at the societal level. No associations are found between discipline experiences and suicide, murder, aggression resulting from alcohol consumption, or aggression expressed in war-making.

  7. ". . . There is the general tendency for murder and suicide each to increase as overall punishment [for crime] increases" (323)Palmer, Stuart - Murder and suicide in forty non-literate societies, 1965 - 3 Variables

This paper tests assumptions regarding the inverse relationship between murder and suicide. Analysis suggests that murder and suicide in fact vary together, and they are also positively associated with overall punishment in a society.

  8. Parental involvement will be negatively correlated with the prevalence of aggression (homicide and assault) (p. 171).Quinlan, Robert J. - Parenting and cultures of risk: a comparative analysis of infidelity, aggres..., 2007 - 3 Variables

This study tests a broad "risk response" hypothesis: environmental risk can reduce parents' involvement and care which, through its effects on children's behavioral strategies later in life, ultimately produces a larger cultural model favoring risky behavior. Examinations of extramarital sex, aggression, theft, and witchcraft support this hypothesis, leading the authors to suggest that child development is the underpinning of cultural adaptation in the face of environmental change.

This article explores narcissism and child-rearing. The author presents a theory that, if a society’s structural pattern weakens the marital bond, the mother will be ambivalent toward the son who consequently will become narcissistic. This process would reinforce itself as it is repeated by each generation.
